Pension & Benefits Conference

GSI is excited to announce our first virtual ELCIC Pension & Benefits Conference.  Instead of meeting in person, we are bringing important pension and benefits information directly to you!

The theme for the online conference is “Learn & Explore,” covering a variety of topics and speakers with information of interest to both plan members and treasurers.

Please join us for any combination of sessions that interest you.

After you’ve registered, you will receive a confirmation email that contains the link to the conference. Please contact GSI if you’ve registered and can’t find that link or if you have any questions at all about the conference. We also welcome questions in advance to ensure that topics of interest are covered.

All conference participants will be entered into a draw with the prize of a $250 to a registered charity of the winner’s choice.

Session #1: Getting the most out of your Benefits plan: what you wish you knew

Presenters:  Lisa Thiessen and Vetta Simeonidis

Session Description:   In this session members will learn about the elements of the benefits plan. We will review what is covered and how to make a claim.

Session #2: Wills, estates, and planned giving

Presenter:  Erin Bokshowan

Session Description: The presentation will provide an overview of estate planning in general. This will include explanations of the foundational documents that form part of the estate planning process including wills, powers of attorney and health care directives. Attention will also be given to specific considerations that may arise in estate planning such as taxation, probate planning, life insurance, funeral arrangements and trusts for children The presentation will also highlight charitable giving as a component of estate planning. The tax treatment for charitable giving and specifically, charitable donation tax credits, will also be discussed.

Stretch Break

Join in a sitting or standing stretch break designed to relieve tension in the hips, back, neck and shoulders. Stretching throughout your workday will help improve posture and boost productivity!

Session #3: Treasurer session: eligibility, enrollment and life events

Presenters:  Lisa Thiessen and Ray Henrickson

Session Description:   We will review the important role of the treasurer as it relates to providing pension and benefits to employees, including eligibility, enrollment, salary changes and monthly invoices. Then we will explore some of the challenges in managing medical absences and other leaves or life events.

Session Description:   In this session we will explore what it means to achieve financial wellness and the benefits of working with a financial advisor. We will also learn how to choose the right advisor for you and what you should expect of your advisor.

Session #5: Retirement dreaming

Presenter:  Paula McMillan

Session Description:

Attend this session to find out what you know and need to know about retirement! Are you prepared?  Do you have concerns?  Are you 5 years from retirement or right on the cusp? Whatever your concern or question, this session will aim to open your eyes to the possibilities and preparation you should be considering.

Session #6: ELCIC Group Accounts

Presenter:  James Ralko

Session Description:

This session will provide you with information surrounding the additional Group Savings Arrangements ELCIC Group Services Inc. has to offer. This would be for individuals who wish to utilize a Group Tax-Free Savings Account or at retirement by making use of the Group LIF, RRIF and RRSP contracts.

Are you ready for a movement break! Great tunes and simple moves will increase your heart rate, warm up your muscles and improve blood flow – all contributing to increased energy and brain power!

Session #7: Treasurer session: taxable benefits and other T4 and payroll challenges and bonus session on Charitable tax receipting

Presenters:  Lisa Thiessen and Ray Henrickson and Pamela Giles

Session Description:   This session is for treasurers who would like to work through the numbers. Perfect timing with year end and having to complete the reporting for 2021 and set things up correctly for 2022! We will review a payroll budget, how to complete the T4 and other record keeping challenges during life events and transitions. Then stay with us for a bonus session on Charitable Receipting.

Session #8: How a LIF works compared to an annuity – which one is right for you?

Session Description:  This session will provide you with information on your options with ELCIC Pension Plan account. The session will describe in detail the LIF and life annuity options, the advantages and disadvantages of each and the possibly of unlocking some of your account. It will briefly touch on taxes and other retirement considerations.

Session #9: ELCIC Pension Plan 101

Presenters:  Lisa Thiessen and Cathy Wilke

Session Description:   This session will take you through the mechanics of the ELCIC Pension Plan. We will review what happens to your account during life events and what to expect when you complete your service to the ELCIC or retire.

Chair Yoga

Join us for simple, yoga-inspired chair poses targeting areas of greatest tension. Practice simple breathing techniques designed to help you de-stress,  re-focus and meet the challenges of the day.

Session #10: Getting the most out of your ELCIC Group Benefits Plan; what you need to know

Presenters: Lisa Thiessen and Vetta Simeonidis

Session Description:   While this session will cover some of the same items as the first session on the first day in order to provide a second opportunity if you are unable to attend on Tuesday, we will expand on some of the topics that generated the most questions. We will also reserve time in this session to provide more detail about the new Health Care Spending Account and the Life Style Spending Account.
