Tip #1: Coverage for CPAP Machines

The value of a good sleep cannot be overestimated. People who have obstructed airways caused by sleep apnea do not sleep well. In many cases, good sleep can be restored through use of a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) or similar machine. Over the past 25 years or so, CPAPs have become smaller, cheaper, and easier to use.

If prescribed by a sleep physician, CPAP machines are covered under the ELCIC Group Benefits Plan at 100% of the eligible amount. In some cases, there may also be provincial coverage available. Members are entitled to two masks per year, with the Plan covering up to $350 per mask. In addition, hoses and filters are included under the Plan’s coverage.

Members are eligible for a new CPAP every 5 years. However, the CPAP must be defective to be eligible for reimbursement.

Manulife strongly recommends that Members submit an estimate before purchasing their CPAP machine, initially and after the five years. This allows the Member to see exactly what the plan will cover in advance.

There is no specific form required for submission. Members can request an estimate directly from their provider and submit it through the Plan Member Secure site. Once the estimate is approved, they can proceed with the purchase and then submit the claim through the same secure site.

Tip #2: Coverage for Semaglutide

Ozempic, Wegovy and other brands of semaglutide medications are covered prescriptions drugs when indicated for the treatment of diabetes. Your physician will be required to complete this form: Group Benefits Drug Prior Authorization Ozempic (Semaglutide).

If you as the Plan Member (or covered dependent) are prescribed this medication for weight loss, it will not be covered under the plan of covered prescriptions.

Protecting Yourself from Fraud

Scammers are not a new phenemonon, but their methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect. It’s way too easy to be caught up in a great deal, a tragic story, or threats. Knowing how to spot a scam can help you stay protected. Here are some things to watch out for.

Unsolicited Calls or Emails

Be cautious of unexpected calls or emails asking for personal information. Scammers often pose as trusted organizations to trick you. They may threaten you with loss of service or offer a bargain.

Never share personal details with anyone you do not know. Don’t click on a link in an email and enter banking information or passwords until you are absolutely certain the link is legitimate.

If you are asked to pay up front for a prize, job offer or service, it is likely a scam.

Unlisted or Unknown Numbers

Avoid answering unfamiliar numbers. Scammers often use local-looking numbers to gain trust; they can make the number appear to be from your area even if they’re not actually calling from there. Legitimate callers will usually leave you a message or send a text or email.

Tips to Avoid Being Scammed

  • To protect yourself from being scammed, always contact organizations (banks, government, charities, businesses etc) using information from their official website, not from someone who randomly calls or emails.
  • Delete emails from people you don’t know. If you open one, don’t click on any links or download attachments.
  • Block suspicious phone numbers and use spam filters to reduce scam calls.
  • Do not rush. Take your time to verify before responding to any unexpected request. When in doubt, ask a friend or relative who is good at recognizing scams whether the request seems legitimate.

The Government of Canada has some good information about how to determine if requests that claim to be from the government are legitimate here.
