May 2026 Treasurers News

The 2025 Annual Report Now Available

This year’s Pension Annual Report follows the theme of horizons.

Highlights include:

  • A greeting from President/Board Chair Rev. Dr. Gordon Jensen
  • Reviews of the ELCIC Pension Plan membership, finances and investment, plan text, policies, SIP&P, and retirement planning
  • a list of current staff, Board of Directors and consultants

In the management of the ELCIC Pension Plan, looking to the horizon is essential to ensure financial wellness as we move toward the horizon of our retirement.

Monthly Invoices

Each month GSI sends the monthly invoice for pension and benefits on the second last Tuesday of the month.

Payment is due on the 15th of the following month — whether payment is by EFT or cheque. That means the GSI office needs to have received your payment by that day, not that the postmark on the envelope needs to be by then. The two weeks after invoices are sent allows time for employers to review the monthly invoice and, if there are changes or errors, to advise GSI.

Employers who have not yet done so are encouraged to sign up for EFT (electronic funds transfer) for speedier and easier payment. You can do that using the Pre-Authorized Debit form, here: https://elcicgsi.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Pre-Authorized-Debit-for-Employers.pdf.

Salary Calculation Forms for 2026

Have you sent in a Salary Calculation Form for all your employees for 2026?

If not and there have been salary changes for your employees, please complete the full the Salary Calculation Form; it may be emailed to GSI at admin@elcicgsi.ca.

If salary is retroactive, we will calculate the retroactive amount, and it will appear on the next monthly invoice.

Treasurers Together Video

In February, GSI hosted two free Treasurers Together sessions over Zoom. The purpose was to educate and refresh Treasurers about various tasks that they are responsible for. The topics included:

  • GSI and the Pension and Benefits Plans
  • Eligibility
  • Absences
  • Forms
  • Invoices & Worksheets
  • Employment Considerations
  • Other Things to Know

If you were unable to attend, or if you did attend but want to see some of it again, the recording and Q&A are available on this page of GSI website.

New Documents from GSI

During Treasurers Together, Barb and Shelley described two new documents that GSI had been working on: a Termination Form and an Absence Tracker. Both are available on the Forms and Worksheets page of the GSI website.

ELCIC Termination Form

When an employee terminates for any reason, GSI should be contacted as soon as you (the employer) know.

To help facilitate this process, we have prepared a new form that makes it easier to communicate all the information that is needed when a member terminates. This form should be completed promptly and returned to GSI. A Record of Employment is to be completed and sent to Services Canada.

For GSI, the monthly invoice is affected when a member terminates, and we must ensure that the salary invoiced is correct. The member also has conversion options for their benefits that are time-sensitive.

ELCIC Absence Tracker

It is an employer’s responsibility to track their members’ vacation time, sick time, continuing education time, etc.

In response to requests for this from employers, GSI has created an Absence Tracker to make this process easier for you. There are detailed instructions on using the Tracker. You can enter all your member employees and their allotted days in one place!

Tracking “time away” is needed for various reasons:

  • sick time – based on a calendar year. The sick leave policy can be found on GSI’s website. If a member needs to apply for short-term disability (STD), a member has waiting period of 10 days before they may apply for STD; sick time may be used during this time period.
  • vacation time – based on calendar year. The vacation policy may be found on GSI’s website. This is important to track from year to year to ensure they have been allotted the correct vacation time and that they use their time! If your employee terminates, you will also need to be aware if they have vacation time to be paid out.
  • continuing education – Time required to undertake an educational event should be provided, at two weeks annually, and accumulated to maximum of six weeks over three years.
  • bereavement & compassionate care leave
  • sabbatical leave
  • unpaid leaves
